The First-Ever Latino Festival in Essex, Maryland

On a vibrant day in 2024, Essex, Maryland came alive with music, movement, and the rich traditions of Latin America at the first-ever Essex Latino Festival — and what a celebration it was!

Hosted by Essex Community Development Corporation (Essex CDC) in partnership with Centro de Apoyo Para La Superación del Inmigrante (CAPSI), the festival was a joyful tribute to the strength and beauty of our community’s diversity. Made possible through support from the Baltimore County Government’s Department of Planning CRAG Program and generous corporate sponsors Tradepoint Atlantic and UniFirst, this inaugural event brought people together from all backgrounds to connect, dance, and celebrate Latin American heritage.

A Perfect Gathering Place

Held at Renaissance Park, right here in the heart of Essex, families, friends, and neighbors gathered under the summer sky to experience the vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors of Latino culture. With ample parking and green space, the Fields at Renaissance Park offered the perfect home for this new community tradition.

A Stage Full of Talent

The festival stage lit up with performances that honored both tradition and innovation:

  • Clave Diferente (Band): Clave Diferente is a young musical group from the Mexican region consisting of talented singers performing serriena music. They formed in Baltimore and were born to Mexican parents, bringing their cultural heritage to life through their music. They are well known in the DMV area!
  • Comparsa Moyotepec Morelos (Dancers): The Flip Flop tradition lives on in Essex! Get ready for one of the most vibrant and colorful performances at the Essex Latino Festival. This traditional dance from Morelos, Mexico, was born after the Spanish Conquest as a way of teasing Europeans’ elegant dresses. However, its roots go back to ancient Aztec ceremonies, making it a unique fusion of history and cultural resistance. Enjoy this tradition while learning about the richness and diversity of Latin American culture. This will be a show for the whole family!
  • Danza Folklor Alebrijes (Dancers): Based in Guerrero, Mexico, Danza Folklor Alebrijes has been captivating audiences for over five years. Led by Magali Mendoza, the group began its journey in Baltimore, sharing the vibrant dance traditions of their homeland with the local community. Today, Danza Folklor Alebrijes is well known throughout Baltimore for the beautiful dresses and cultural dance style. Their performances help connect families in the Mexican diaspora with their roots. Danza Folklor Alebrijes performs across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. It is a treat to have them perform at the Essex Latino Festival!
  • Sonido Bailaras (DJ): With over ten years of experience in Baltimore, Sonido Bailaras is a popular DJ known for energizing parties and celebrations, including weddings and baptisms. As a proud Mexican artist, he brings a lively atmosphere to every event. We’re excited to have Sonido Bailaras as our DJ for the Essex Latino Festival!
  • Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School Latino Dance Club (Dancers): This Dance Club from a local Essex school is performing a mix of Latino dances from various countries.

Community, Culture & Connection

Beyond the music and dancing, the Essex Latino Festival was filled with ways to engage and connect. Families enjoyed face painting, crafts, and scavenger hunts, while resource booths from Baltimore County departments, nonprofits, and regional service providers shared information to support our local immigrant and working families.

Vendors added color and flavor to the day, selling beautiful handcrafted items and cultural goods that represented countries and traditions from across Latin America.

A Taste of Latin America

Of course, no festival is complete without food — and this one was bursting with flavor! Guests enjoyed delicious Latin American dishes like pupusas, tacos, empanadas, elotes, baleadas, and more. The smell of grilled street corn, sizzling meats, and sweet pastries filled the air, creating a feast for all senses.

A Festival to Remember

The Essex Latino Festival wasn’t just a one-day celebration — it marked the beginning of a new annual tradition rooted in inclusion, celebration, and community pride. As Essex continues to grow and evolve, this event showed just how powerful and joyful it can be when we come together to share our stories, cultures, and traditions.

We’re so proud of the community that made this day possible — and we can’t wait to see you next year!
